Sciatica is frequently claimed by anyone with pain in the low back, hip or lower limb.
Originally from Latin, it describes irritation of the sciatic nerve. This nerve starts as a collection of roots in the lumbar plexus (low back) and travels out the bottom of the pelvis, through the hip, and down the back of the leg to the knee. Due to this connection between the low back and the leg, people with lumbar disc or spine issues can experience severe pain anywhere between the low back and the knee.
Sciatica can be a frustrating and humbling experience. Nerve injury causes muscle weakness, debilitating pain and, left untreated, can lead to atrophy or even permanent muscle and sensation loss. Painkillers and muscle relaxers can reduce the discomfort but are only a temporary strategy to wait out the crisis. When the inflammation dies down the symptoms will recede but what caused the inflammation?
Maybe the issue comes and goes a few times and surgery seems inevitable. Surgery has its own problems and doesn’t always prevent the issue from returning. Physical therapy can strengthen muscles and stretch tissues but what about the nerve causing the weak muscles and tight ligaments?
With a proper evaluation of your condition, the state of your central nervous system can be determined. The structural integrity of your spine and spinal cord can be brought into focus, and the core of the issue can be addressed directly. Chiropractic is the only profession in the world that is focused solely on freeing the intelligence of your body from interference. With the cause of sciatica resolved real healing can take place.
